Female Foeticide In India Can We Really Stop It?

female infaticide

Declining sex ratio is an issue of serious concern in India. Of course! It should be; because when it comes to our human society, everything depends on the both sexes equally. No matter what we do for the sake of our relationships but it is a reality that a family is completely dependent on adjustment between a man and woman and they are the foundation of our country as well.

These days, we are blaming female foeticide for the decline in the sex ratio in our country but it is an undeniable truth that this merciless act is only possible with the consent of father, mother, and grandparents. Yes! It is impossible to kill the unborn female child without the consent of her mother. May be some feminist writers put an objection for this but they can’t change the fact because we can’t ignore the evil practices, customs, superstitions and hipocricy of our society wherein both men and women give an equal contribution.

Recently, Indian actor Aamir Khan has raised the issue of female foeticide in the very first episode his debut Indian TV Talk Show – “Satyamev Jayate” and we must appreciate his sincere efforts to bring the reality to the forefront. However, at the same time, we should keep in mind that female foeticide is not an issue in real sense. Actually, it is the result of dowry system and many other evil social practices of our society and we can’t stop this inhuman act just by raising the slogans like Save the Girl Child” or “Stop Female Foeticide”. For this, we need to change the mentality that is responsible for the “female foeticide”. We must stop the dowry system of our society and we need to avoid the misplaced archaic nonsense of girls being the ‘honor’ of family. Unfortunately, this is a tradition in our Indian culture, but some people take it seriously enough to make murderous acts for the sake of ‘honor’ that is driven by the hugely inflatable male chauvinist egos. We must remember that this is our society that shows pity on the father of 3 or 4 girls and of course, no father wants himself to be considered as a subject of pity. Hence, until we change our mentality, stop the dowry system and avoid spending extravagantly in the marriages, we won’t be able to stop “female foeticide”.

  1. I don’t understand how girls prove to be costlier than boys. Equal amounts of money are spent in education and marriage. Girls leave the house of parents for marriage, but still have a soft heart for their family. But boys leave their parents after marriage, and settle down with their wife. Even if they live with their parents, they hurt their parents’ emotions. So, can you please explain? How a boy is a better child than a girl?

  2. Previously, i use to think that education will change the thinking of the people but since past years i am surprised to know that in this crime educated people are more then illiterate.

I really wish that through TV Talk Show Satyamev Jayate may people understand the importance of a girl and stop killing it!

  3. Government stepped in to fight this social evil but in my opinion, proper implementation of laws is a problem. Pre-Natal Diagnosis Technique Act was enacted by the Legislature but this act must be interpreted keeping the purpose/objectives of the act in mind. In Gujraat, Honest efforts have been made by the government which must be followed by all other Governments. This is a Social Problem which is inherent in our social Mentality so Laws can only support in order to destroy this Social Evil otherwise awareness and education can only bring change by which we can Protect girl who is the creator of this world and deserves respect.

  4. A mother can not take this step in her life, she loves her child more than her life. But few old thoughts and due to illiteracy of man and their parents, it happens. If you want wife or sister for your child, you will have to give birth to your daughter…

    Please mind it.

Thank You Everybody. And thanks to Aamir khan for Satyamev Jayate

    Thanks

  5. only i want to say is dat we cant force others 2 change their traditions , if we really wanna do smthng then v shud start wid ourselves , our homes and our people …firstly v shud see dat wot v r actually doing then only v have ne ryt to speak about others …but d other thing is dat the problem is nt only traditions …ppl think dat to avoid the main problem lets cut d root …so if they vl not let d root grow …nthng can b done …so both d things r equally responsilbe …thus, to bring this 2 an end “female foeticide” shud also be stopped …

  6. In my opinion girls are the boon of the world.without girls we cant imagine this world.

  9. Actually only law can’t able to stop this anti-social practices. There is need to broad awareness and change human opinion about on it. Specially orthodox people have to need understand importance of girls, and dowry and other practice also need to remove from our society. Only strictly rules not change people mind.
